abstract
The following abstract is taken from the introductory paragraph of the thesis. "The history of man’s progress from his earliest known existence to the present day is both interesting and instructive. It is not surpassed in wonder by any of the fairy tales that mind has been able to produce. Far in the dim and remote past, we find man but little above the level of the beast with whom he lived and struggled for mastery. Science, law, home, society, had not as yet even become a dream. The primitive instincts – hunger, thirst, sex and activity were his controlling forces. What were his joys, his hopes, his longings, his ambitions, his dreams – perhaps to civilized man will always remain an unwritten page."
