abstract
The following abstract is taken from the introductory paragraph of the thesis."Education is the art 'of training human beings for the functions for which they are destined.' In order to be an art education must be founded on a corresponding science. In order to mould a human being in the desired way, the nature of the being must be known. The knowledge of man’s nature is usually comprehended under four divisions: the constitution of his body (physiology); the constitution of his mind (psychology); his social nature (sociology); his moral and religious nature (ethics and religion). In the widest sense, education is everything which an individual experiences form the cradle to the grave. But in a more limited sense, education is confined to the efforts made by the grown-up part of a community to inform the intellect and to mould the character of the young; and more especially to the labors of professional educators. Formal education cannot be understood rightly or interpreted correctly except by those who have an understanding of education in its broadest sense."
