abstract
The following abstract is taken from the introductory paragraph of the thesis. "Social reform, as viewed by a large number of people involves, not state action, but reforms inaugurated and completed by industrial corporations. Socialism, the antithesis of individualism, is of slow growth. Our abundant natural resources and the character of our immigrants, both past and present, tend strongly to develop the individualist. Consciousness of kind did not begin to develop in America until within recent years. In our earlier history resources were in such abundance that there was little conscious need for society to concern itself about the welfare of the individual. For he who would might, with little effort, acquire a home and plenty."

State Teachers College of Colorado is a former name of the University of Northern Colorado.
