abstract
The following abstract is taken from the introductory paragraph of the thesis. "The lot of feeble-minded children in ancient times was usually very hard. They were scorned, derided, persecuted and often killed by exposure and violence; traces of such practices among the Spartans were found in the laws of Lycurgus. They were treated in the same manner by the South Sea Islanders and North American Indians until recently.
