abstract
The following abstract is taken from the introductory paragraph of the thesis. "The first schools in the United States were private. Anyone who had sufficient education to read and write could open a school. No qualifications were fixed by law. Usually a master was hired by relatively ignorant people and kept as long as he seemed to get results and often when no results were in evidence. When, however, the various colonies began to think of a system of public education certain plans of certification came into use." note
State Teachers College of Colorado is a former name of the University of Northern Colorado.
