abstract
The following abstract is taken from the introductory paragraph of the thesis. "Strictly speaking, a novelette is that instrument of fiction whose range lies between that of the novel and that of the short story. Midway of its compass – and this does not necessarily mean a narrative that conforms in word length – it assumes proportions and characteristics that may, in all fairness, be considered typical. Because the border lines are indistinct and variable, the novelette in its most diminutive form may masquerade as a long short story or, in its extreme pattern, as a short novel or a serial of three or four installments. Because it blends some of the satisfying qualities of the novel with the economic methods of the short story and the drama, even when it is recognized as an established form, it is often denied individuality of type by the American mind."
