abstract
The following abstract is taken from the introductory paragraph of the thesis. "It is the purpose of this discussion to state, as clearly as possible, the aims of a true democracy, to outline the program into which these aims issue and in which they express themselves, to trace the growth of the democratic spirit in our national history, and to treat somewhat of present-day democracy in America, -- its virtues and its vices, and the means of perfecting it. The writer feels this latter to be an urgent and distinct necessity, and dares to suggest that the most obvious line of procedure in that direction is a more modern interpretation of the principles of the teaching of Christ, and a more general application of those principles to our economic and social life."
